Leeds City Council awarded the ‘Heat and Efficiency: Operational’ trophy at the ADE’s

Leeds City Council were awarded the prestigious ‘Heat and Efficiency: Operational’ trophy at the ADE’s Decentralised Energy Awards for the success of their low carbon district heating network.

PARKdesigned helped with the Leeds PIPES scheme which uses heat and energy recovered from non-recyclable waste at the Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility (RERF) to produce hot water for the city’s buildings.

We designed the Cross Green Energy Centre at the start of the network to harness steam from the RERF, convert it into low temperature hot water and feed it through the heating network to supply heat and hot water.

We also helped with the submission of two planning applications for the above ground heating pipework system at the Leeds Playhouse and Glencoe View. The pipework crossing over Glencoe Bridge was given a more creative finish by local artist Nathan Evans, per our suggestion to make the project more visually appealing.

In 2021, the Leeds PIPES Network supplied 13,900 megawatt-hours of heating and contributed to a carbon footprint reduction of over 2,000 tonnes in the city.

At present, the network spans more than 26 kilometres, but as it continues to expand and regularly connect to new buildings it is set to become one of the UK’s largest heat networks in the future.
