RIBA YORKSHIRE AWARDS 2022 SHORTLIST ANNOUNCED
The Royal Institute of British Architects have released their shortlist for their Yorkshire awards. Formed with the aim of supporting British architects and introducing new people to the world of architecture, the RIBA Yorkshire shortlist celebrates the best architecture across the region, in cities, towns and villages all over Yorkshire.
The five projects shortlisted were the Carnegie School of Sport by Sheppard Robson, Courtyard House by Doma Architects, the Leeds Footbridge by Gagarin Studio with DP Squared, Maggie’s Yorkshire by Heatherwick Studio and The Alice Hawthorn by De Matos Ryan.
The Carnegie School of Sport was designed for Leeds Beckett University’s Headingley Campus and completed last year. The £45m multi-purpose sports centre can be used as a training hub for top athletes and a location for students completing research programmes.
Courtyard House, designed by Harrogate-based Doma Architects, was built on the site of existing stable buildings in Wetherby. The house is low energy, contemporary and complete with an art studio.
The Leeds Footbridge crosses the River Aire, connecting two sides of the city within the Climate Innovation District and it is the longest single-span pedestrian bridge in Leeds. The project, designed by Gagarin Studio and DP Squared provides access to both green pathways and a traffic-free cycling network.
The Maggie’s Centre in Leeds provides support for people with cancer free of charge. This can come in the form of one-to-one help or group activities and discussion. It marked the first health building completed by Heatherwick Studio. PARKdesigned had the pleasure of taking part in Leeds Society of Architects Building Tour of Maggies in Leeds. Community pub, The Alice Hawthorn, was in danger of closure before the intervention of De Matos Ryan. The Grade II listed pub is based in the North Yorkshire village of Nun Monkton and the scheme saw the property renovated with the addition of 12 guest bedrooms.
The winner will be announced by the RIBA later this spring. PARKdesigned congratulates all of the nominees.
