Castleton Mills Leeds
THE RENOVATION THAT TURNED A FACTORY INTO A CREATIVE INDUSTRY HUB
Castleton Mills, situated on the fringe of Leeds city centre was a textile mill housing steam-powered flax spinning machines when it opened just shy of 200 years ago.
Within the last decade, however, PARKdesigned have transformed it into an industrial utopia and today it is home to many businesses including one of the fastest growing plant-based companies in Yorkshire, Mighty.
The alt-milk brand featured in an article for The Guardian last week, citing Castleton Mills as home to a growing number of plant-based food companies. Mighty co-founders, Tom and Nick Watkins, are brothers and started their business in 2018. Their plant milk is available in more than 5,000 stores in 12 different countries across the UK, Europe and Asia. They are now one of the UK’s biggest independent family-run plant-milk businesses, operating out of a former textile mill.
After the site’s acquisition by Resolut LLP and PARKdesigned (as executive architects) along with Architectural Emporium (interior design) back in 2012, it was renovated to be a perfect destination for art, lifestyle and commerce. It has certainly more than lived up to expectations in the time since.
