Shou Sugi Ban Residential Extension

PARKdesigned designed a single storey rear extension to a house in Wakefield that was wrapped in Shou Sugi Ban (charred timber).

The timber cladding is a modern application of the ancient Japanese art of charring timber to provide an unconventional finish to a residential extension that is also long lasting. The vertical cladding planks of charred timber provide a dark black appearance from the carbon layer which protects the lumber inside. This creates a a maintenance free façade. The result is a single storey structure that has a striking appearance when contrasted with the existing 1950’s brick home. More information on Shou sugi ban can be found here - Shou sugi ban

The extension provides a new open plan kitchen/living/dining that has doors which fold back to open the corner of the extension to the garden.
