PASSIVE HOUSE LEEDS

As part of International Passive House open day, PARKdesigned visited a newly built Passive House in Leeds. The house was owned and designed by Richard Spencer of LEDA. The talk and tour of Richards house was a very good insight into how to design and build a Passive House and also the pitfalls to avoid.

Passive Houses are energy efficient buildings that make use of the sun, internal heat sources and heat recovery ventilation so that conventional heating systems are virtually not required. The homes are built with superinsulation, low-volume heat recovery ventilation systems and tightly controlled rates of air infiltration. The 5 Passive House principles are:- thermal bridge free design, superior windows, ventilation with heat recovery, quality insulation and airtight construction.
