Completion on Stoneleigh

PARKdesigned have recently completed a rear extension with internal alterations to a house in Leeds.

The brief was to replace the existing tired, dark and dilapidated out-buildings with a contemporary kitchen/dining extension. The client wished to open up the rear of the property to create a better relationship with the garden and provide easy access for their children to play outside, whilst being able to watch them from the kitchen.

The design utilises the existing garden walls to form a more rational space with a floating cantilevered roof above, inspired by American case study houses. The careful puncturing of the garden wall with a glazed screen composed of sliding panels offers unobstructed views beyond the cantilevered terrace into the garden. The retention of the original openings in the potting shed (one of which was a coal shoot) provide a playful fenestration design to the rear elevation.

Internally, the level change from the existing house consciously demarcates the open plan kitchen area. The warm material palette combined with a deep blue kitchen island gives an intimate yet contemporary feel. The internal floor finish which runs onto the terrace providing a fluid connection between inside and out. The relationship with outside is further enhanced by the large 3m long roof light strip which floods the space with natural light.

The completed scheme has resulted in a contemporary extension which sits effortlessly into its surroundings complimenting the existing house.
