about the project

PARKdesigned a leading residential architecture firm based in Leeds, was commissioned to transform a dilapidated 250-year-old cow shed into a contemporary residential home for a downsizing couple.

Situated in a greenbelt area, the project aimed to preserve the barn's heritage while creating a modern, open-plan living space that capitalises on the expansive views over West Yorkshire towards the Pennines.

The design approach focused on maintaining the barn's original open feel, incorporating large glazed openings to flood the interior with natural light and provide panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. The use of natural materials, such as aged timber and stone, ensured the extension complemented the existing structure, seamlessly blending the old with the new.

Internally, the layout was configured to support a modern lifestyle, featuring an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area that encourages social interaction and flexibility. The minimalist interior design emphasised the building's rustic character, with exposed beams and masonry juxtaposed against contemporary finishes.

Externally, the extension was designed to be subservient to the original barn, respecting its historical significance while providing additional space. The careful selection of materials and attention to detail ensured the new addition enhanced the property's aesthetic appeal without compromising its heritage value.

This project exemplifies PARKdesigned's expertise in delivering sensitive and innovative residential architecture in Leeds, particularly within greenbelt contexts. By harmoniously blending traditional elements with contemporary design, the practice created a home that meets modern living requirements while preserving the site's historical essence.

As experienced Leeds residential architects, PARKdesigned continues to deliver bespoke architectural solutions that respect and enhance the unique characteristics of each site, ensuring client satisfaction and architectural excellence.
