about the project
PARKdesigned, a leading architectural firm in Leeds, played a pivotal role in the transformation of Canal Mills, a historic former textile mill, into a dynamic cultural venue. This adaptive reuse project aimed to create a versatile environment accommodating various creative endeavours, from art exhibitions and pop-up restaurants to live and electronic music events.
The design preserved the industrial heritage of the building while introducing flexible spaces that could adapt to diverse artistic expressions. This approach fostered a constantly evolving atmosphere, attracting both established and emerging talents to showcase their work in a unique setting.
One notable feature of the renovation was the commissioning of a large-scale mural by the renowned street artist Phlegm. This artwork spanned an entire wall within the complex, reflecting the site's industrial past and contributing to its vibrant new identity as a cultural hub.
The successful conversion of Canal Mills not only preserved an important piece of Leeds' industrial architecture but also enriched the city's cultural landscape by providing a space that supports and nurtures creative talent.
